The other thing I'm thinking of right now is the story of the hacking of an adulterous website in the USA. In the land of the free, and home of the brave, they seem not too far removed from the authoritarian UAE. It's a sobering thought - not that I hope it puts any dampers on your pub lunch! I'm sorry for your friend's tragic end :-/ What an insensitive thing for UAE to do. This piece shows how important a fair legal system is. It's shocking that you weren't informed of the charges and never got a lawyer or representation from the Aus/UK consulate- you did really well getting out of it without the usual legal/consular help! Also, weird that they could only try you if you agreed to be tried...that is just odd. I've had a number of "discussions" with friends who tell me how pleased they are Qatada has been deported, and some seem happy (or at least sanguine) about his being tortured. My question is always "what has he been convicted of?". If he's done what the police (and their media cheerleaders) claim there is presumably ample evidence to try him in the UK. But no, we'd rather return him to Jordan to face trial on dubious (because obtained through torture) evidence.
Without due process you enter the sort of Kafkaesque world that the likes of Bradley Manning have had to endure, where your "crimes" are too sensitive for anyone to be made aware of them, but "clearly" grievous.
I see the Egyptian military government and their media are describing the Muslim Brotherhood and their elected president as "malicious terrorists" (which begs the question of whether you can have a "benevolent terrorist"), and you can bet they won't get due process.
In short, I agree that due process is absolutely fundamental to a proper functioning justice system.

JamesdarAnonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5829162137963866383.post-75818148279782427792013-08-09T04:30:26.366-07:002013-08-09T04:30:26.366-07:00Sounds like a big "cheers" is deserved a...Sounds like a big "cheers" is deserved all round!
